Johnny Bargain, author of “A Collection of Bummer Summers”

Wow, what an adventure! Headshot: Johnny Bargain
My book, “A Collection of Bummer Summers,” turned out far better than I ever imagined was possible. Carla Perry’s encouragement to re-imagine my old Staten Island neighborhood and record the stories that percolated in my head led to months of talking into a tape recorder. Carla transcribed the recordings, then organized the stories to create a marvelous book. Artist Sarah Gayle not only sketched the motorcycle I rode back in the 1960s, she used it as part of the police barricade scene on the front cover and then tackled a dozen hand-drawn maps showing exactly where the stories’ incidents took place. That pair is a winning team. I couldn’t have done it without them.—Johnny Bargain.
